Have You Ever Shared a Tunnel with a Train?

06-17-13

We left Anchorage by 11:00 a.m. by bus, heading towards Whittier.  It’s only been in the last few years that the cruise lines have been able to leave from Whittier.  There is a railway line that runs from Seward up to Prudhoe Bay.  Only one train line in the whole state.  Several years ago the train was going to widen their passage thru the mountain from Whittier.  Apparently the cruise lines got with the rail lines and asked them to accommodate the buses by widening enough for both of them.  So now, both the buses and the railroads use the same tunnel.  The tunnel is wide enough for a bus plus about six feet.  It runs 2 ½ miles.

So, as soon as we got thru the tunnel, boom!, there was the ship.  It’s a big mutha, too. Holds over 1900 people.  If you’ve ever ridden a ship, you know they give you a health questionnaire to complete before boarding.  One question did Terry in---have you had a fever.  Uh, yes….101.

Well, that little checked box got us a personal escort onto the boat and to our room.  We sat for a couple of hours until our steward told us to call the medical center.  We went down and saw two doctors, one from Australia and one from South Africa.  If only some of our American doctors were so nice.  After questioning us about have we seen any bears on our trip, a flu test was administered.  Yep, positive!  Go To Your Room---Quarantined! Which was fine with Terry. And me.  We were both exhausted.

No pictures today.  It was a LONG day!
