Talkeetna, Where Denali Hikers Begin Their Dream

06-16-13

Today we left Denali, heading towards Anchorage.  Let me say we saw the summit again today, making it 3 out of 4 days that we saw it.  Highly unusual…we are definitely members of the 30% Club!

Today was largely uneventful.  We did stop for a short while at Talkeetan.  This is the town that the tv show Northern Exposure was based in.  A very quaint town with unusual shops.  This is also the town that the hikers who climb Denali leave from.  In fact, we met 6 guys who were leaving this evening.  They were six teachers from a small town outside of Minneapolis.  If you want to follow look up Go4thesummit.com or join them on facebook.  These guys have done several trips together to enhance the subjects they teach at school.  They have full backing of their school boards and townspeople.

Each guy had his gear lined up and getting ready to pack in their packs.  I believe they said their packs would weigh over 100 lbs, but don’t quote me on that.

I wish them well on their two week journey.

We made it down to Anchorage in time to return the car by 5:00.  I have driven over 1400 miles this week.  Whew, it is good to hand those keys back to Alamo.

We checked into Captain Cook Hotel late in the afternoon.  Now we are in the hands of Princess Cruise Lines.

Martha has come down with the crud, feels horrible, and is coughing.  Terry has reallllly come down with something.  He has a fever of 101.  We aren’t calling the doctor until we get on the ship tomorrow morning.

Old timey grocery store where hikers and wanna-be's load up

Bar at back of store.  It's Sunday, so guess no alcohol sales on Sunday.

This visitor's center is about the prettiest I've ever seen

Bread on wheels

Couldn't resist prettiness

Million bells, I think

More petunias
